UAE ANNOUNCES NEW ABORTION RULES OFFER RELIEF TO WOMEN WITH HIGH – RISK PREGNANCIES
New controls specify that requests will be evaluated by a committee comprised of three UAE doctors including an obstetrician-gynecologist and psychiatrist, plus a prosecution representative.
UAE has updated its abortion laws, expanding permissible cases and refining consent requirements. Abortions are now allowed if the pregnancy endangers the woman’s life or if severe abnormalities are detected.
The law also emphasizes the need for informed consent from the pregnant woman, prioritizing her autonomy. The requirement for spousal consent has been removed, except when the woman is unable to provide consent herself.
The legal amendments also stipulate that all abortion procedures must be performed in authorized medical facilities, with comprehensive medical reports justifying the necessity of the procedure. Unlawful abortions carry severe penalties, including imprisonment for healthcare professionals who perform them without legal justification.
